| artist statement

I just want to engage the viewer.

The paintings I make are narrative, painted from a bird’s eye view with deceptively simple images and bright color. This is what will initially ignite the viewer’s desire to step into the narrative of the canvas. I believe that the artist is a revealer of a world that is ordinarily hidden from us, and the work invites a jumping off point for the viewers imagination.

My medium is acrylic on canvas, using small brushes to build up many translucent layers of color. I like patterns and circles of light. I often find crows in my paintings, which seem to represent the flurry of chattering thoughts in my head.

Strongly influenced by community and culture, social commentary, history, and folklore, I paint entirely from memory and by imagination. I am self-taught and don’t want to “know” what I’m doing. I trust my intuition and everything interesting in my paintings comes in mysteriously, out of the blue.

I hope you enjoy my work!
