Vision and Philosophy Teachers and students experience tremendous exhilaration as they engage in learning through the arts. Teachers become energized by the hands-on approach that is natural and basic to the creative process. Also, they observe in their students strengths and interests that had never surfaced before. The environment of arts-integrated classrooms encourages spontaneity and the free flow of ideas. Students who tend to excel in the traditional classroom, but who may be under-stimulated, find challenges and motivation in the arts process. Students who may appear to be academically weak when taught through traditional approaches to areas such as language arts or history blossom and gain self-confidence when taught those areas through theater, creative movement, art, or music. Furthermore, during arts participation, kids see each other in another element. The process builds respect among their peers and gives kids who might not normally excel a chance to become the "authorities." Goals Provide students with learning-through-the-arts opportunities that meet the needs of a wide range of learning styles and personality types. Teach teachers and student teachers how to use theater, creative movement, music, and visual art to teach all areas of their curriculum, such as math, science, language arts, foreign languages, social studies, health, and special areas such as school bullying and teasing prevention programs.
