A place for the community

Of the Community, For the Community: The Foothills Arts Center (FAC) is a grassroots community organization founded in 1989 by a group of Western Maine people who saw a need for a community center where people of all ages could gather to make friends, stretch their imaginations, and express their creative spirits. In FAC’s first two years, over 200 community members helped write the philosophy, goals, and mission statement for the Foothills Arts Center’s facilities and programs.

Centrally located in downtown Wilton: In May 2008, the Foothills Arts Center opened the region’s long dreamed-of community arts center in the historic Bass-Wilson building (the former Bass Shoe factory) on Wilson Lake, just off Rts. 2 & 4, on Main Street in Wilton.

Our school and community programs: In 1991, we began to serve the community by offering programs in schools, churches, and grange halls. FAC soon became known throughout Maine and beyond for nurturing the creativity of all kinds and ages of people. Furthermore, we continue to involve large groups of people in the planning and implementation of all programs.

The Foothills Arts Center brings curriculum-based arts programs into the schools and involves people of all ages and walks of life in arts programs that build a sense of community.

Our programs include an arts day camp, classes and workshops in all kinds of hands-on learning for adults and children, original community musicals based on local heritage, Theater for Peace, and Continental Harmony Community Chorus.

A few of the hundreds of enthusiastic comments we have received: “Participating in Foothills programs has helped me to become more successful in all that I do.” “I feel very safe and comfortable at Foothills functions.” “Here I can be who I really am.” “The teachers made me feel I could do it and not to give up.”
